Pay is a major topic on most people's mind in any industry and even though mining is a well-paid industry, money is still at the forefront of mining professionals minds no matter what most people say. Speaking to candidates on a daily basis, the question of pay always comes up and I believe there is always money on the table for great talent. However, there are ways in which you're most likely able to get that pay rise and maintain & build goodwill with your employer.
Here are a few ways to help you with this:
- Book a meeting with your manager or superior to discuss performance. In the meeting, show enthusiasm, gratitude and calm your emotions. Praise your manager and the company and point out in clear, specific profit you have brought to the company or division.
- You could highlight the cost savings you have made due to your actions resulting in transparent cost saving for everyone to see that is measurable.
- You could propose some actions you will lead and head up that will increase future turnover and profit. You could then ask for a pay rise or bonus as a % of this increased revenue for the company
- For roles that don't appear to be revenue generating then you could demonstrate where you have saved money that you can measure or where you have saved many hours or even systems and processes that you have implemented that saves both time and money which would lead to increase production and revenue.
Companies and organisations vary; some may be more structured and less rigid than others. The most important thing to all of this is to ASK because if you don't ask you don't get. You must show that you can add value through increased revenue or saved time. Good luck and let us know how you go with this.
